Overview

They Send Word is a 2024 short film directed by Mariano Schoendorff, following José Manuel Ordovás as he recounts an extraordinary journey through loneliness, violence, crime and drugs, before finding salvation in an unexpected congregation of aliens. The film premiered at the SEMINCI — Valladolid International Film Festival and is currently available on Filmin. I was responsible for the sound design and mix, working alongside Nicolas Schilke's original score to shape the sonic identity of the film. The sound was built around José Manuel's intense and unconventional testimony, using detailed environmental sounds and carefully crafted sonic elements to support the rhythm of his narration and the film's shifting tone. The challenge was to find the right balance between the documentary nature of his story and its increasingly surreal character, allowing the sound to subtly reinforce the humour, tension and strangeness of his world.
